Jason Schreier has revealed that Blizzard is working on a StarCraft shooter. It would be the third attempt by Blizzard to create a shooter out of their famous RTS franchise, we have no doubt that this too will be canceled.
Jason Schreier, the legendary gaming journalist, is claiming that a StarCraft shooter is in development. This would be Blizzard's third time trying.
During the promo phase for his new book ‘Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment’, Jason Schreier was a guest on IGN's podcast Unlocked. One topic of the book was the attempt to develop a StarCraft shooter. When asked about this, Schreier said:
Yes, that is a project that as far as I know is in development, or at least as of the time that I wrote this book was in development. They are working on a StarCraft shooter, StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.
This time, the rumor is based on the hiring of Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay, who has been with Ubisoft since 2011, working on Far Cry 3 to 6, and has been with Blizzard Entertainment as GM/VP since 2022.
This wouldn't be the first time that Blizzard has tried its hand at a shooter for its legendary RTS franchise. Back in 2002, a tactical-action shooter for consoles entitled StarCraft: Ghost was in development, which was cancelled in 2006.
The second attempt was called Ares and was supposed to be a StarCraft shooter in the style of Battlefield. The project was cancelled in 2019, as Blizzard wanted to focus on Diablo IV and Overwatch 2.
As Schreier said:
...it really just shows you that Blizzard cannot quit StarCraft shooters.
While it's nice to hear that StarCraft isn't dead, it's hard to believe that the dream of a StarCraft shooter will ever come true. Maybe one day we'll see it, but until then it's a fantasy like Half-Life 3.
