One of the most famous D&D livestreams gets another animated series for one of its campaigns.
After having their first campaign already transformed into the animated show The Legend of Vox Machina, the second D&D campaign played by Critical Role got picked up by Prime Video to get animated: The Mighty Nein. And as Travis Willingham recently announced, the show is "more than halfway done".
Mighty Nein will adapt the second campaign played by Critical Role, which ran from 2018 to 2021 over the span of 141 episodes. After the release of a first-look teaser back in July we now got the next update.
In an interview, Critical Role CEO Willingham said:
The storyboards are all being locked, if they haven't been already. So it’s off to our overseas studio. We're getting animation tests back and seeing things come back in color. We’ve designed all the characters. The magical spells and effects are being considered. We’re talking about music and how it’s going to be different from Vox. So it’s definitely more than halfway done and I think everybody’s going to be really thrilled with the way it’s turning out.
But all of that doesn’t mean that The Legend of Vox Machina will come to an end soon. It’s getting a fourth season. Thank the Dawnfather!
Still, we can expect a way more complex storyline and characters as well for The Mighty Nein, since the campaign behind The Legend of Vox Machina was the first D&D game for some of the cast, making for some cliché tropes. The Mighty Nein will have more interesting characters and roles with a more fleshed-out origin story for each character.
About that, Willingham explained:
It is not going to be the same tone as Vox Machina. In Vox, they start together. They’re kind of a bunch of slap-dicks that are just making the best of their situation.
It seems like the audience as well as The Mighty Nein themselves will have to do some work to find out if they are friends or if they are even the good guys. And with the show halfway done, we might find out soon – fingers crossed!
