Minecraft is dropping VR support

Everyone loves Minecraft, and we expected it to be huge for VR, but we were sadly wrong. Mojang will pull support soon.

Minecraft VR provides a great way for fans to fully immerse themselves in the game’s world. But sadly, it hasn't been popular enough to justify continued support.

Mojang announces end of VR support for Minecraft

On October 22, Mojang released the latest Minecraft: Bedrock Edition changelog on their official website. The update announced that a final update for Minecraft VR will be released in March 2025, after which VR support will be officially discontinued.

"Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025, when you will receive your final update. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PC and be able to play without a VR/MR device," Mojang stated in the changelog.

The changelog also reassured players that they can continue building in their worlds and that all Marketplace purchases, including Minecoins, will still be accessible. However, after March 2025, VR and MR devices will no longer be compatible with Minecraft's latest updates.

Why is VR support ending?

While disappointing to many, Mojang’s decision is understandable. The active player base for Minecraft VR has remained relatively small, which likely factored into the decision to end support. Maintaining VR compatibility requires resources that may not be justifiable given the limited number of players.

For players who love experiencing Minecraft in VR, there are alternatives. Vivecraft, a popular mod, will continue to offer a full VR experience in Minecraft. Vivecraft works best on room-scale VR setups compatible with SteamVR hardware, such as the HTC Vive, Cosmos, Valve Index, Oculus Rift S, and WMR headsets.

Are you a fan of Minecraft VR? If so, will you switch to Vivecraft to keep the experience going?
