Ubisoft's long-running attempt to bring Splinter Cell to the big screen has officially been cancelled.
Originally announced over a decade ago with Tom Hardy attached to star, the project was abandoned due to production difficulties. Producer Basil Iwanyk explained: “That movie would have been awesome... Just couldn't get it right, script-wise, budget-wise.”
A decade's worth of progress comes to an end
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Iwanyk added, “We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That's one of the ones that got away, which is really sad.”
While the news will come as a disappointment to fans of Ubisoft's iconic stealth-action franchise, there is still hope for Splinter Cell on the big screen. Ubisoft continues to explore adaptations, with several TV and film projects in development. One promising project is the animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, which was officially unveiled by Netflix in September. Although the teaser only lasts a minute, it gave viewers a first glimpse of what to expect from the series.
